The airline is asking for an onward ticket: what should you do?

An airline may ask you at online check-in, the desk or the gate to show that you will leave your destination before your permitted stay ends. This does not always mean you need a return flight to your home country: a genuine journey to a third country may be acceptable. Before buying anything, ask the agent to define the requirement.

Why airlines check onward travel

Carriers check entry requirements that depend on your passport, visa, transit and itinerary. The aviation industry uses documentary databases such as Timatic. If a traveler is found inadmissible, the carrier may have to transport them back and may face costs or penalties.

The airline does not make the final immigration decision, but it may refuse carriage when it believes the passenger lacks the required documents.

Six questions to ask

  1. Do you need an issued ticket or will a reservation do?
  2. Can the journey go to a third country?
  3. Is a bus, train or ferry accepted?
  4. What is the latest acceptable departure date?
  5. Does the rule concern the final destination or a transit point?
  6. When does check-in close?

If the answer remains unclear, ask a supervisor to verify it. A precise answer prevents you from buying the wrong document under pressure.

Check what you already have

Look for a separately booked flight, an international bus or ferry, a trip included in a tour, a ticket purchased for you, or an existing flexible booking. The document should normally show your name, the date, a route that actually leaves the country, the carrier and a usable reference. Save an offline copy.

Choosing a solution

Buy your real next journey

This is usually the clearest option if your next stop is known. Make sure it leaves before your authorized stay ends and that you can enter the next destination.

Buy a refundable ticket

This produces an issued ticket but may tie up significant funds. Read the refund exceptions, fees, method and processing time. “Flexible” does not necessarily mean fully refundable.

Use a temporary reservation

A temporary reservation may show a named itinerary when the agent accepts a reservation. It is not an e-ticket and does not let you take the listed flight. Check its validity window and describe it accurately.

Use a land or sea departure

Only rely on this when the journey genuinely crosses the border and the agent confirms that the document is suitable.

Check before returning to the desk

  • The name matches the passport.
  • The date falls within the permitted stay.
  • The journey leaves the correct country.
  • You can enter the next destination.
  • The reference and status are readable.
  • A temporary document is still active.

Never edit a PDF, invent a booking code or claim that a reservation is a paid ticket. A false document can make the situation more serious.

If the airline still refuses carriage

Ask for the exact reason in writing and request the available rebooking or change options. Keep receipts and contact your insurer if relevant. A refusal based on inadequate travel documents is not automatically treated like overbooking under passenger-rights rules.

FAQ

Can an airline ask for more than immigration?

It applies the documentary information available to it and its conditions of carriage. Ask which exact requirement is being applied and request a supervisor review if needed.

Is a PNR enough?

Not always. A PNR identifies a booking record; it does not automatically prove that a ticket was issued. The answer depends on what evidence is expressly required.

Does ExitPass guarantee boarding?

No. ExitPass supplies the document described in its offer. The airline and border authorities decide whether to accept it.
