Asked for an onward ticket at the airport: what should you do now?

You are at the counter and the agent refuses to finalize the check-in without proof of exit. Time is of the essence, but buying the first document you come across can make the problem worse. Here is the safest order of action.

1. Make the request specific

Ask calmly:

Need help with airline vocabulary? Onward ticket · Check-in · Boarding pass · Denied boarding. Browse the full air travel glossary.

  • is a ticket required or is a reservation sufficient?
  • can the exit go to a third country?
  • is a bus, train or ferry accepted?
  • what maximum date must appear?
  • does the requirement concern the destination or a stopover?
  • how long is there before the counter closes?

Write down the answer and, if necessary, request confirmation from a supervisor.

2. Check what you already own

You may already have valid proof:

  • a following flight in another reservation;
  • an international ferry or bus;
  • a return ticket purchased by another person;
  • a confirmation in your email;
  • a journey included in an organized tour.

Download the full document. A calendar capture or search result is usually not enough.

3. Choose the appropriate option

Buy your real next ride

Choose this option if you know your next step. Check that you can enter the destination, that departure is within the allowed time and that the ticket is confirmed.

Buy a refundable ticket

It can respond to an explicit request for a ticket issued. Check the fees, method of reimbursement and return of funds before paying.

Order a temporary reservation

It can quickly provide a named itinerary when the agent accepts a reservation. It is not an e-ticket and its acceptance cannot be guaranteed. Check the actual delivery time before choosing this option.

Use a land or sea exit

First ask the agent if this method is admissible. A bus reservation that does not actually cross the border does not solve the problem.

4. Check before presenting the document

Check:

  • the spelling of the name;
  • the date;
  • the country actually left;
  • the next destination;
  • status;
  • the reference;
  • offline readability.

If the document is temporary, make sure it is still active at the time of the check.

5. Come back to the same counter

Simply explain that you obtained the requested document. Do not pretend that a reservation is a paid ticket. Let the agent verify and respond factually.

What you absolutely should not do

  • download a fake ticket;
  • modify a PDF;
  • invent a reservation number;
  • purchase a journey after the end of the authorized stay;
  • book to a country where you cannot enter;
  • multiply purchases without understanding the reason for refusal.

If no solution arrives in time

Ask if the ticket can be changed, if a later flight is available and if insurance covers the situation. Obtain the reason for refusal in writing when possible and keep all proof of expenditure.

Prevent the problem next time

The day before departure, check the rules applicable to your nationality, your visa, your transits and your length of stay. Upload the documents, keep a credit card available, and plan a realistic exit solution.
