Immigration asks for an onward ticket: which documents should you show?

At the border, an officer may check that your visit is temporary and that you plan to leave within the permitted period. The decision depends on your passport, visa, length of stay, itinerary and the country’s rules.

Start with the clearest evidence

Show the document that most directly answers the question: an issued flight ticket to another country, a return ticket, an onward reservation where accepted, an international bus, train or ferry ticket where land or sea exit is allowed, or a confirmed departure included in a tour.

It should ideally show your name, a suitable date, departure point, destination, carrier and reference. Never describe a temporary reservation as an e-ticket.

Supporting documents

The officer may also ask for accommodation, funds, insurance, permission to enter the next destination, or an explanation of your trip. Onward proof does not replace these items. Keep one coherent file rather than several conflicting plans.

How to answer

Be brief and factual. Show the requested evidence, then answer follow-up questions. If you do not understand, ask which information is missing. Do not invent an itinerary or hide the temporary nature of a reservation.

If the document is rejected, ask whether the issue is its date, transport mode, ticket status or next destination. Buying a new journey from the inspection area may be difficult, so prepare offline copies before departure.

Airlines and border officers conduct different checks. Acceptance at check-in never guarantees admission.

Compare formats in the proof-of-onward-travel guide and review PNR versus e-ticket.

Avoid

  • Altered or expired documents.
  • Departure after the permitted stay.
  • A next country you cannot enter.
  • Confusing a PNR, order number and issued ticket.
  • Contradictory answers about your stay.

FAQ

Is a temporary reservation always accepted?

No. It depends on the stated requirement and the authority’s assessment. It does not replace an issued ticket when one is required.

Can immigration verify a booking?

An officer can review its reference and request more evidence. Only present a real, active document.

Is a phone copy enough?

Often, but an offline or printed copy avoids connectivity and battery problems.
