Is an onward ticket fake? Fake tickets, real reservations and PNRs explained
The term “onward ticket” first describes proof of onward travel. It does not, on its own, say whether the document is an issued ticket, a temporary reservation, or a fabrication. So the right question is not “are all onward tickets fake?” ”, but: **what did the supplier actually create and how does he present it?**
Four objects not to be confused
The counterfeit note
It is a fabricated or altered document that purports to represent a nonexistent reservation or ticket. It may use an airline logo, invent a number or modify an old PDF. It should not be used.

The actual reservation
A reservation corresponds to a file created in a reservation system. It can contain a name, route, dates, segments and status. It may exist before a ticket is issued and be canceled or expire.
The PNR
The Passenger Name Record is the file containing the information necessary to process the reservation. A short code, often called a record locator, helps identify this record in a given system. A trip involving an agency, a marketing carrier and an operating carrier may have several references.
The e-ticket
The electronic ticket is the transport ticket issued. It includes a ticket number and represents an additional step compared to simple reservation. Even with an e-ticket, boarding remains subject to passport, visa, check-in and other conditions of carriage.
Signs of a transparent service
A serious supplier must clearly indicate:
- that he provides a reservation or a ticket;
- if an e-ticket is issued;
- the estimated duration of visibility;
- how to carry out a check;
- what happens if the reservation cannot be found;
- that no boarding, visa or border crossing is guaranteed.
A vague promise of a “100% guaranteed ticket” without explaining its nature should alert you.
How to check what you received?
Search separately:
- the seller's order number;
- the reservation reference or PNR;
- the code specific to the operating carrier;
- an e-ticket number, generally longer;
- the status and dates of the file.
The absence of a ticket number does not necessarily mean that the reservation is false. It means that no identifiable electronic ticket is presented.
Where is ExitPass located?
ExitPass provides a temporary flight reservation according to the characteristics displayed when ordering. It is not an electronic ticket and the document does not allow you to board the reserved flight. The reservation is designed as proof of itinerary during its active period.
ExitPass does not guarantee acceptance by any company, embassy or immigration authority. These organizations retain their decision-making power.
Why wording matters
Presenting a reservation as a paid ticket creates a false expectation and can put the traveler in difficulty. Conversely, calling any unissued reservation a “fake ticket” is technically inaccurate: the industry routinely creates records before issuance.
The essential distinction concerns the existence of the file and the honesty of the presentation.
FAQ
Does a PNR prove that the ticket is paid?
No. You need to look for ticketing information or an e-ticket number.
Can a reservation disappear?
Yes. An option may expire, be canceled or modified by the provider or company.
Can I edit an old post to create proof?
No. This produces a falsified document, without a corresponding reservation.
