Proof of onward travel: which documents should you show at the airport?
Proof of exit shows that you plan to leave a country before the end of your authorized stay. It can be requested by the company on departure or by immigration on arrival. The simplest document is a confirmed plane ticket. Depending on the country and your situation, a trip by bus, train, ferry or boat may also be accepted. However, there is no universal document valid at all borders.
what the agent is trying to check
The agent generally wants to be able to identify:

- your name;
- a release date compatible with the authorized duration;
- a journey actually leaving the territory;
- the carrier and the points of departure and arrival;
- a reservation reference or a ticket number, depending on the document;
- a consistent and, when promised, verifiable status.
Proof of exit does not replace a passport, a visa, or other entry requirements.
The most common documents
Air ticket issued
An e-ticket generally includes a ticket number and corresponds to paid transportation. This is the most complete proof, provided that the date and itinerary comply with the applicable rule.
Temporary flight reservation
A temporary reservation contains an itinerary and a reservation file that is active for a limited period of time. It is not an e-ticket and does not allow you to board the reserved flight. Its ability to respond to a request depends on the context and the decision of the agent.
Bus, train or ferry
These means can constitute a real exit when crossing an open border and the rule does not specifically require an air ticket. Check that the route is operated, accessible with your status and recognized by the destination.
Cruise or maritime transport
A nominal confirmation may sometimes be appropriate. You must be able to show a date, a port of departure, a destination outside the territory and a consistent reservation.
Proof of funds
Some plans allow certain travelers to demonstrate that they have the necessary resources to purchase their trip. This is not a general alternative: it should only be used when an official source provides for it.
Documents that pose a problem
- screenshot without name or reference;
- unpaid basket or simple search result;
- canceled ticket or expired reservation;
- domestic journey which does not leave the country;
- impossible road or closed border;
- modified or manufactured document;
- reservation in the name of another person.
How to prepare your proof
- Check the official rule corresponding to your passport, visa and itinerary.
- Check the deadline for your stay and choose an earlier exit.
- Check that the next destination is accessible to you, including transit.
- Match the name exactly to the travel document.
- Download the confirmation and keep it offline.
- Keep useful references to find the reservation.
If the agent refuses your document
Calmly ask what specific requirement is not met: date, mode of transport, status, destination or lack of ticket issued. Ask if there is an accepted alternative and how much time is available before registration closes.
Don’t argue based on a testimonial you find online. Present the relevant official source or choose an option that clearly addresses the request.
FAQ
Is a hotel reservation proof of exit?
No. It can prove accommodation, but not the transport used to leave the country.
Is a ticket to a neighboring country enough?
It may be enough if you can enter that country and the journey leaves the territory within the required time frame.
Should I print the document?
The digital format is often accepted, but an offline or printed copy reduces practical problems.
