Return ticket required at check-in: why and what if you do not have one?
Check-in may pause when a manual document review is needed. The agent is checking the destination’s conditions: passport, visa, transit and, where relevant, proof that you will leave.
Why it happens at check-in
Passport data and the itinerary are checked against documentary requirements. An alert can block online boarding-pass issuance and send you to the desk. This reduces the airline’s risk of carrying someone who may be refused entry.

“Return ticket required” may actually mean proof of onward travel. Ask whether a third-country journey works and whether the agent needs an issued ticket or a reservation.
If you already have onward travel
Show the full confirmation with your passport name, a departure date within the permitted stay, a journey leaving the country, a carrier, a reference and a coherent status. Another flight booking, ferry or international land journey may work. A search result or unpaid cart is not a booking.
If you have no proof
- Ask when check-in closes.
- Clarify the exact document required.
- See whether you can buy your real next journey.
- Compare a refundable ticket with a temporary reservation based on the request.
- Check the name, date, route and validity.
- Return to the same desk with an offline copy.
A temporary reservation is relevant only when a reservation is accepted. It is not an e-ticket and does not let you take the listed flight.
Does failed online check-in mean denied boarding?
No. It often means that an agent must inspect your documents. Arrive early with everything available. Denial is only formal when the airline decides not to carry you.
If your proof is rejected, ask whether the problem is the date, ticket status, route, expired booking or inaccessible next destination. Request a supervisor review when appropriate.
