Reserve a flight without paying the full fare: what are your options?

You need an itinerary for an application but do not want to buy your final ticket before receiving a decision. Or you have found a flight and want to keep the option open for a few days. In either case, “reserving without paying” can describe very different services.

An airline hold, an agency quote and a temporary reservation do not necessarily provide the same document. Some services charge a fee even though you do not pay the full airfare. A refundable ticket involves an actual purchase before any possible refund.

The right choice depends on what you want to secure: a fare, a retrievable reservation or a ticket you can use to travel.

This table describes categories, not a claim that every airline offers a hold or every agency creates a booking when supplying a quote.

A concrete example: Air France Time to Think

Air France offers Time to Think during eligible online or app bookings, before ticket issuance. Availability is not guaranteed for every flight or fare. The option protects the selected fare, itinerary, cabin and fare conditions for the period shown when you buy it. There is no universal duration to assume.

1. Select your flight and check whether the option is offered.
2. Read the exact expiry time and option fee before paying.
3. Keep the confirmation email and its payment link.
4. Pay the full ticket price before expiry if you decide to travel.

The option fee varies with the destination and time before departure. It is additional, non-refundable and not deducted from the ticket price. Without ticket issuance before the deadline, the reservation and fare guarantee expire. The option itself gives no right to transport. Air France conditions, effective 2 June 2026.

If you need a document for a visa application

Start with the official checklist for your application. The represented country, consular office, your residence and visa type matter. Instructions for another applicant may lead you to the wrong document.

Two examples show why the precise instruction matters:

• Spain, Washington consular office, Schengen visa: the consulted page requests, among other items, a round-trip flight reservation from the United States with a booking reference. This example concerns that office and procedure. Spanish consular information in Washington.
• Norway, visitor visa applications under the embassy in India: the current official page recommends waiting until the visa is granted before buying the ticket. Use its documentation section to select the checklist for your own application. This advice is specific to that procedure; it does not validate every temporary reservation service. These instructions do not establish that the same reservation fits every visa. They show that a procedure can distinguish a reservation from a final purchase. Also check dates, itinerary type and how long the document must remain relevant to the application.

If the instruction is unclear, ask the responsible office: “Do you require a reservation with a booking reference or an issued ticket with an electronic ticket number?” Keep the reply and share the requirement with the supplier before ordering.

A quote does not always prove a reservation exists

A quote can show a route, times and price without a booking record being created. That may be enough to compare offers, but not necessarily to satisfy a request for a confirmed reservation.

Ask the seller exactly what it delivers. If a booking reference is advertised, ask where it can be checked and what the result proves. Do not infer that a ticket has been issued because a PDF says “confirmed.”

What does “without paying for the ticket” actually cost?

Separate the service fee from the transport price. You may pay someone to create or hold a reservation without acquiring the right to take the flight. Conversely, a refundable offer may require you to advance the entire ticket price.

When comparing two options, record:

• what you pay immediately;
• the document you receive;
• how long the hold or reservation stays active;
• the cost of an amendment or new reservation;
• what is refundable and under which conditions.

Consider a fictional example: a reservation service costs €15, while a flight ticket costs €450 and is refundable under conditions. The €15 buys a service. The €450 buys transport and requires money upfront. These amounts illustrate the distinction and do not represent any current offer.

The flight date is not the reservation’s expiry date

A confirmation can show a flight several weeks away even though the reservation remains active only for a limited period. Ask when that period begins: at payment, creation of the record or an activation you perform later?

For a consular application, a reservation active when you print it will not necessarily remain active when the file is reviewed. Follow the procedure’s requirements and ask the supplier what it can actually provide. Do not edit the document to make it appear valid for longer.

When you are ready to travel, check the position with the seller or airline. A temporary reservation does not automatically become a purchased ticket.
